(KFVS) - Governor Pat Quinn will be delivering his Fiscal Year 2013 Budget Address on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Quinn will be speaking at the House Chamber in the Illinois State Capitol at 12 p.m.

The event will be streamed live at www.illinois.gov.

Republican Central Committee sponsors commissioner candidate forum

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The public is invited to a candidates' forum for Republican candidates for the office of Williamson County Commissioner on Thursday, Feb. 9.

The forum will be in the Reichert's Meeting room next to Rural King in Marion, Ill.

Currently, there are five candidates running for the Republican ticket:

  • James "Jim" Marlo
  • Phil Jeralds
  • Bob Rendleman
  • Jeffrey Isbell
  • Donald Holman

Organizers say the doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the forum starts at 6:30 p.m. The primary is March 20.

Congress approves bill to protect air service for Ill. communities

MARION, IL (KFVS) - Congress approved a bill Monday night that protects air service for Illinois communities.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin announced that the Senate approved legislation that will ensure Illinois communities including Marion, Quincy and Decatur will remain part of the Essential Air Service program.

The FAA Air Transportation Modernization and Safety Improvement Act was approved by the House of Representatives last week and will now go to the President for his signature.

Durbin said the the bill helps rural areas keep the commercial air service they have now and attract new service in the future.

New legislation allows those with disabilities to wear bracelet that contacts 911

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) Governor Pat Quinn announced Wednesday she signed a legislation to improve the security of Illinois residents with different disabilities using a remotely-activated bracelet.

The bracelet will contact emergency services during a missing persons incident.

“We need to make sure that our most vulnerable citizens can get help when they most need it,” said Governor Quinn. “This measure will greatly help caregivers and emergency personnel respond to someone who needs assistance and return them safely.”

Under the current law, it is a Class A misdemeanor to install or connect an automatic alarm, alarm altering device or mechanical dialer that contacts 911. House Bill 1610 is an exemption for bracelets that can be remotely activated to alert emergency response personnel of a person in need.

The bracelets are activated under the new law are activated upon alert from a missing person's registered caregiver.

State Treasurer Rutherford holds press conference on state debt

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford will hold a press conference to discuss state debt on Monday, May 23.

Rutherford will use the press conference to detail the state's debt in a clearer and more meaningful way. He says he will explain his position toward borrowing and debt..

The conference will be in the Capitol Blue Room in Springfield, Ill. at 1:30 p.m.

According to the office of Rutherford, Illinois is on the verge of a financial disaster because of borrowed dollars and other financial liabilities making the state's credit rating for future borrowing unaffordable and unwise.

Free skate night for Marion elementary students

MARION, IL (KFVS) - Students in first through eighth grades can skate for free Thursday, March 24.

The skate night will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Emery Brothers Skating Rink and is hosted by a committee to promote Mayoral candidate Carol Swartos. Several members of the S.I Roller Girls will be there to meet the students and sign autographs.

Parents are required to sign their children in and out of the skate night because it is considered a private party.

Free skate night for kids in Marion has been rescheduled

MARION, IL (KFVS) - Mayoral candidate Carol Swartos will host a free skating event for Marion kids in grades one through eight on Thursday, March 24.

The skating event is from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. and will promote candidate Swartos. It is funded by donations from other events she has hosted.

Skating will be at the Emery Brothers Skating Rink. Only Marion Unit 2 students, including Creal Springs, may attend. A Southern Illinois Roller Girl will also make an appearance.
