Cheekiest Dog Ever contest at Alto Vineyards Springfest May 11

MARION, IL (KFVS) - Celebrate the season with the Cheekiest Dog Ever contest during Alto Vineyards Springfest 2013- Saturday, May 11 from noon to 8 p.m.

Bring out your furry friend and enter for a chance to see your dog on the front of an award-winning Alto Vineyards wine. Admission is $6 and includes a souvenir glass and access to local artisans and festivities. Long Branch Café and Town Square Market offer delicious, fresh local foods and dancing to the fan-favorite sounds of The Merchant Men and The Venturis.

Illinois ranks fifth in the nation for lowest percentage of pet-owning homes

(KFVS) - The American Veterinary Medical Association recently released its U.S. Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook, which revealed that Illinois ranks fifth for pet-owning households with 51.8 percent.

The survey is conducted by the AVMA every five years and always includes a breakdown of pet ownership by state. The most recent survey, conducted in 2012 but based on Dec. 31, 2011 numbers, reveals that the top 10 pet-owning states are:

  • Vermont - 70.8 percent
  • New Mexico - 67.6 percent
  • South Dakota - 65.6 percent
  • Oregon - 63.6 percent
  • Maine - 62.9 percent
  • Washington - 62.7 percent
  • Arkansas - 62.4 percent
  • West Virginia - 62.1 percent
  • Idaho - 62 percent
  • Wyoming - 61.8 percent

4th Annual Dachshund Race Fashion Show Sept. 22

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The 4th Annual Dachshund Race and Fashion Show will be Saturday, September 22 at noon.

The event will be at the Marion Tower Square Plaza in front of the Bank of Marion. Registration starts at 11:30 a.m. The race and fashion show will benefit the American Legion Post 147 Auxiliary and Marion Abstract Co., Inc.

Admission is a non-perishable food donation. Trophies will be awarded to first and second places, "Mayor's Cup" Best Dressed, "Look-A-Like" Best Dachshund/Human Outfits and "Most Original."

Tickets on sale for 'The Yappy Howler' event

CARTERVILLE, IL (KFVS) - The Animal Rescue Coalition of Southern Illinois announced that tickets are on sale for the group's first annual summertime event, "The Yappy Howler!"

The event will be at Walker's Bluff Winery on Sunday, Aug. 26 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature MGM recording artists The Egyptian Combo. Tickets can be purchased through Southern Tickets Online.

"'The Yappy Howler' event will raise money and awareness for area animal rescue organizations," said Gail Venegas, spokesperson for the Animal Rescue Coalition of Southern Illinois. "The mission of the Animal Rescue Coalition of Southern Illinois is to bring animal rescue groups together to advocate, educate and to raise money for the member rescue groups."

Kennel club to host AKC Dog Shows in Marion

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The Crab Orchard Kennel Club will be hosting their annual AKC Dog Shows at The Pavilion on Saturday, August 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, August 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Admission is $5 and children 10 and under are free. This year's shows will have about 600 dogs entered with over 100 breeds represented. A judging program with breed ring times will be available online by clicking here.

Saturday's show will include a Fun Match along with microchip, hearing and eye clinics. Sunday's show will have a raffle and a 50/50 drawing at 10 a.m. There will be a large selection of vendors carrying all types of dog related products and concessions will be available. No strollers or baby carriages will be allowed for the safety of children and dogs. Only dogs entered in the show and/or attending the health clinics will be allowed in.
