CARTERVILLE, IL (KFVS) - Texting and driving can be one of the most dangerous things you can do.
That's
why AT&T is teaming up with community colleges in Illinois, and the
Illinois Department of Transportation to ask people to stop texting and
driving.
On Tuesday afternoon Illinois' Lt. Governor Sheila Simon joined in the campaign.
"It's
some thing we've all seen as drivers," said Lt. Governor Simon. "We've
seen other drivers who are not paying attention to the roadway. This
effort by AT&T, the community colleges and the department of
transportation is a chance for us to stop and think about it. And think
about our behavior to make sure that we're not endangering ourselves and
others."
Several dozen John A. Logan students were on hand
as the Lieutenant Governor was joined by representatives from AT&T
and campus leaders.
"We feel that we have a strong responsibility
to help educate anyone that no text is worth folks being injured or
killed over," said James Maurer, AT&T Vice President of External
Affairs. "So we're encouraging people throughout the country to not text
and drive."
The organizers also want everyone to take a pledge
on September 19th as a "No Text on Board Pledge Day" and to stop texting
and driving for the entire month.
"It's an opportunity to take
that pledge and that says you're not going text and drive at any time
this month. And to stop any kind of distracted driving," said Maurer.
