HERRIN, IL (KFVS) - Habitat for Humanity of Williamson County is inviting the public to the ground breaking ceremony for the third house to be started in Herrin.
The ground breaking will be Monday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. at the building site in the 1200 block of Weaver Road, just north of the Herrin-Colp Road. Members of the Board of Directors and City of Herrin officials will conduct the brief ceremony.
According to the Habitat for Humanity of Williamson County, the house to be built will be the first structure on the newly acquired development that was formerly on the site of the original Harrison House. They say this is the 15th home they have undertaken and all of the others, located in Creal Springs, Johnson City, Herrin, Pittsburg and Marion, have been built by all-volunteer labor since the chapter's affiliation with HFH-International in 1999.
The local chapter says the houses are similar in size with about 1,200 square feet and three bedrooms and two baths. They are thoroughly insulated and finished with painted drywall, carpet and linoleum or tile as requested by the prospective homeowner. The outside is vinyl siding and includes a porch, landscaping and an outdoor storage shed.
According to HFH, homeowners are chosen on the basis of need, ability to pay for the house at a favorable payment rate and the willingness to work 200 hours on their house or the Habitat projects. Prospective homeowners are selected from applications submitted by those who meet the national HFH income guidelines and then go through a process of review by an independent committee, which includes a committee visit to the current home. Individuals interested in becoming HFH homeowners are encouraged to contact the local HFH chapter online at www.habitat-williamsoncounty.org or by mail at P O Box 754, Marion, IL 62959 or by calling 618-997-3134.
HFH says volunteers are always needed for working on the various building projects, organizing and running fund-raisers and serving on the Board of Directors. Interested members of all of the communities of Williamson County should contact the Habitat for Humanity of Williamson County at one of the addresses shown above.
For more information contact HFH President John Holst at Zion United Church of Christ, 930 West Cherry St., Marion, IL 62959 or by phone at 618-997-5190 or by email at pastor@zucc.org.
