MARION, IL (KFVS) - The Southern Illinois Miners announced Tuesday they signed former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Daniel Calhoun.

Calhoun is a 6 foot, 3 inch, 220 pound left-handed starting pitcher entering his fourth year of professional baseball.

According to the Miners, in 2009 while pitching at Murray State Calhoun was named an All-American by collegebaseballinsider.com, Collegiate Baseball, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assoc. and Ping. He went 11-3 with a 2.32 era while leading the nation in the least number of walks per nine innings pitched.

"The reports I have from the Cardinals organization is that he is extremely competitive on the mound and is a supreme strike thrower," said Miners manager Mike Pinto. "There was a lot of interest by other teams in Daniel and we are excited that he wanted to play in Southern Illinois.”

Opening day for the Miners will be Friday, May 18.
