Williamson Co. Tourism Bureau wins Ill. Gov.'s Conference Award

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Williamson County Tourism Bureau was awarded the 2013 Illinois Governor’s Conference Award for Best Leisure Collateral on February 27.

They were presented the award at the annual Governor’s Conference on Travel & Tourism held at the Rosemont Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill. 

The bureau’s annual Fishing Guide was chosen among many entries for the best in the state. This free publication is distributed in 12 states and is promoted in various medias throughout the Midwest.

Cambria church to present special service featuring MICO founder, president

CAMBRIA, IL (KFVS) - Cambria Christian Church will be hosting a special service of music and missions on Sunday, March 17.

The event will feature Don W. Todd, founder and president of Memphis Inner City Outreach in Memphis, Tenn.

It will start at 9:45 a.m. during Sunday School and continuing into the Church Service at 10:45 a.m.

MICO was established in 1989 with a primary focus on the homeless and prisons in inner city Memphis. The Memphis Inner City Church, known as "The Church Where Anyone Can Go," was established in 1990, and was a party of the ministry for the next 16 years.

Currently, Todd is traveling two weekends a month, presenting concerts in churches in area states in order to raise funds for the Haiti Medical Clinic. Over 1,500 people per month receive medical treatment through his funds.

The church says a love offering will be accepted at the end of the service.

(KFVS) - Iconic American rock band Journey has been added to the Grandstand entertainment line-up for Sunday, August 18 at the Illinois State Fair.

Tickets for the concert will go on sale Saturday, April 27 through Ticketmaster. They will be available starting at 10 a.m.

"Our team is putting together an outstanding line-up of musical performers," Governor Pat Quinn. "From classic rock bands Journey, Styx and REO Speedwagon to country superstars Toby Keith, Gary Allan, The Band Perry and Thompson Square, this year's entertainment is going to be something you don't want to miss."

Girl Scouts of Southern Ill. celebrates 101st anniversary March 10-16

(KFVS) - The Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois will join more than 3.2 million Girl Scouts across America in celebrating the 101st Anniversary of Girl Scouting March 10-16.

Locally, the Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois will celebrate in a variety of activities and events ranging from flag ceremonies at their school, birthday party celebrations, and community service projects with their troops; while others will create displays highlighting Girl Scout history.

“Making the world a better place isn’t just part of the Girl Scout mission statement…it’s a real and lasting commitment to make Girl Scouting relevant for many generations to come,” said Villie M. Appoo, CEO Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois.

“The Girl Scouts has a long and rich history of providing girls in all of our communities with a first-rate Girl Scout Leadership Experience that will give them the courage, confidence and character to make the world a better place for everyone,” Appoo added.

Rep. Bradley encourages students to enter 'Doodle 4 Google' contest

MARION, IL (KFVS) - State Rep. John Bradley (D-Marion) invited local students to participate in Google's "Doodle 4 Google" contest for the opportunity to have their artwork featured on the Google homepage.

Those feature could receive a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant from their school.

"The Doodle 4 Google contest is an innovative way to encourage students to demonstrate their creativity," Bradley said. "We have a great many talented students in our community, and I encourage all of them to take advantage of this opportunity to help fund their college education, while supporting their current school at the same time."

Doodles are the fun versions of the Google logo that appear on the Google homepage to recognize special events and people. The theme for this year's contest is "My Best Day Ever..." and students are invited to submit their entries by mail or online by March 22.

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The Hospice of Southern Illinois Counseling Services Department will be available March 22 for the 2nd Annual Power of Attorney Day.

The event is to assist community members in understanding and completing Power of Attorney for Health care forms.

Hospice of Southern Illinois would like to invite everyone to come by the office, 204 Halfway Road in Marion from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Choir tour 'Beautiful America: A New Generation' to visit Herrin April 10

HERRIN, IL (KFVS) - Watoto, a holistic care program, initiated to serve the dire needs of Africa and her people, is thrilled to present a brand new choir tour entitled "Beautiful Africa: A New Generation."

The production will be presented at Christian Life Center on April 10 at 7 p.m. The tour began in Houston, Texas and will tour for six months visiting several cities throughout the U.S including Baton Rouge, La., Mobile, Ala., Pensacola, Fla., Nashville, Tenn., Lexington Ky., Cincinnati Ohio, Pittsburgh Pa., Buffalo N.Y., Detroit, Mich., and Grand Rapids, Mich., concluding the tour in Chicago, Ill.

With vibrant, original African music; dance routines; life-transforming stories, the tour is indicative of the new generation of leaders emerging out of Watoto.
