Williamson County participates in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

MARION, IL (KFVS) -  Sheriff Bennie Vick would like to announce that the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office will participate in another National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Williamson County Administrative Complex at 407 N. Monroe Street in Marion. 

This event allows people to drop off any expired, unused, or unneeded prescription medication at local collection sites. 

Agents from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration will pick up the medication for destruction in an environmentally acceptable way.

 The Williamson County collection site will also have “Sharps” containers available to dispose of needles and syringes.

 This is a free and completely anonymous service.

Parade of Quilts Celebration April 24-27

WHITTINGTON, IL (KFVS) - The Parade of Quilts Celebration will be April 24 through 27 at the Southern Illinois Art and Artisans Center.

Each year the Artisans Center offers a display of unique art quilts created by members of the Illinois Artisans Program. These exceptional quilts encompass both traditional and modern designs and offer a lively look into the art of contemporary quilt making.

The center is located at 14967 Gun Creek Trail in Whittington, Ill.

Quarter Auction April 27 to benefit American Heart Association

HERRIN, IL (KFVS) - The Herrin Hospital Heart Walk will hold their Quarter Auction to benefit the American Heart Association on Saturday April 27 at Herrin Civic Center.

Doors open at 5 p.m. and auction begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 each which include one bidding paddle, an “all in” paddle can be purchased for an additional $25. Vendors will include Thirty-one, Tupperware, Norwex, Scentsy, Premier Jewelry, Cookie Lee Jewelry, Paparazzi, Orgami Owl, Juice Plus, The Wooden Spoon, Heritage Makers, Miche, Celebrating Home, Silpada, Beauticontrol, Pampered Chef, Nerium AD, Visalus-Body by Vi and Light My Fire Candles and more.

Organizers say they will also have over 100 items donated from local businesses. They will have the quarter auction, a silent auction, raffle, 50/50 and a bake sale.

IEMA launches initiative to enhance safety on Illinois campuses

(KFVS) - The Illinois Emergency Management Agency recently announced an initiative to enhance safety for students, staff and visitors on college and university campuses.

Nine colleges and universities will participate in a pilot of the Ready to Respond Campus program, with a full rollout of the program expected in January 2014.

“The Ready to Respond Campus program will recognize those institutions that meet rigorous standards for ensuring the safety of their students, staff and visitors,” said IEMA Director Jonathon Monken. “The Ready to Respond Campus designation will let current and prospective students and their parents know that safety is a top priority on the campus.”

LEAA Arts Center in Marion to host free Art Workshops

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The Little Egypt Arts Association, Inc. is offering free art workshops at the LEAA Arts Center in Marion.

Interested students should bring items listed for each workshop. They can bring a sack lunch or snack. Workshops are limited to 15 students and pre-registration is required.
