'Old Bags' auction in Marion on Feb. 23

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The American Legion Auxiliary will be hosting an "Old Bags" auction for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital on Saturday, February 23 at 4 p.m.

The auction will be at the American Legion Post 147, 11720 Longstreet Road in Marion. It will cost $5 per person at the door.

Auctioneer Frank Sweetin will conduct the live auction for an assortment of new or slightly used purses and bags shown off by Post models. There will be a variety brand names.

'Everything Sugar and Spice' fundraiser March 16 to benefit Children's Miracle Network

HERRIN, IL (KFVS) - A Children's Miracle Network fundraiser event, "Everything Sugar and Spice," will be March 16 at the Herrin Civic Center.

For the past two decades, the Children's Miracle Network has teamed up with Miss America to raise awareness and funds for children around the country suffering from life threatening diseases. Organizers say they are incredibly excited to also be working closely with the Children's Miracle Network, the official national platform of Miss America's Outstanding Teen.

Miss America’s Outstanding Teen, Inc. is organized to encourage positive achievement by helping to nurture and build the scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, healthy living and community involvement of our nation’s youth. The organization has implemented programs aimed at helping young people develop strong values, leadership skills, social conscience, self-worth and conviction about their own potential.

Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge hosts Waterfowl Hunt meeting

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The U.S Fish and Wildlife Service and Friends of Crab Orchard Refuge invite you to attend an open forum on the Controlled Waterfowl Hunting Area on Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge.

The meeting will take place at the Crab Orchard NWR Visitor Center on Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m.

According to the Refuge, the purpose of this meeting is to receive constructive comments and ideas from hunters to assist in the review of Refuge regulations, hunting area boundaries, blind locations and design as well as other issues that may affect you, the waterfowl hunter.

The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. For more information on our work and the people who make it happen, visit www.fws.gov.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Williamson County Fire Protection District is in a contest to win 40 new fire helmets.

The contest is sponsored by the National Firefighters Endowment and Phenix Fire Helmets.

Southern Ill. Food Packing Event 2013 will be Feb. 2

(KFVS) - The 1st Southern Illinois Food Packing Event 2013 will be Saturday, February 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will be at the SIUC Newman Center at 715 South Washington Street in Carbondale. Organizers are hoping to unite churches and businesses in the Southern Illinois area to package a minimum of 43,000 meals for orphans in third world countries.

They say anyone can be a participant at this event: any age, anyone who is willing to help scoop rice, soy, dried vegetables and seal them in a box.

To register, you can go to www.foodpackingevent.com, click on the "Sign Up" at the top right corner, fill in required information (click on Carbondale, Ill. for: Choose the event). It costs $54 a participant. Organizers say you can pay by the secure form of Paypal online or have all checks made out to Food for Orphans by Jan. 25. Volunteers to hold bike refurbishing day in Herrin, Ill.

HERRIN, IL (KFVS) - AmeriCorps members who serve with Lutheran Social Services of Illinois' (LSSI) Prisoner and Family Ministry will be teaming up with the Marion Federal Prison Work Camp for a bicycle refurbishing day.

Members of the community are invited to donate bicycles at the Hurricane Baptist Church, located at 406 S. Street in Herrin, Ill. on Monday, Jan. 21 between 9 a.m. and noon.

The bicycles will be given out to returning citizens who need transportation to work.

Jane Otte, executive director of Prisoner and Family Ministry will also be on hand at the event.
