WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -The staff and friends of Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge celebrated the opening of a new canoe and kayak launch on Devils Kitchen Lake on Saturday, August 18.
The new launch is located off of Tacoma Lake road and replaces an older, badly eroded launch site. The project was completed as part of the Fish & Wildlife Service’s “Summer of Paddling 2012” initiative. The initiative, as explained by deputy Refuge manager, Kevin Sloan, “… recognizes the value of non-motorized boating opportunities for refuge visitors.”
After cutting the ribbon, paddlers launched into Grassy Creek and paddled out onto the southern portion of Devils Kitchen Lake which is surrounded by the Crab Orchard Wilderness. According to the refuge, motor boat access is limited in this area, making it a favorite with paddlers.
