Carterville resident honored for community service | Community Spirit

CARTERVILLE, IL (KFVS) - Twenty-five Illinoisans were awarded the Governor's Volunteer Service Award by Governor Pat Quinn and the Serve Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service on April 6.
Amy Simpson from Carterville, Ill. was awarded for her service to Gum Drops in the Adult category.
Gum Drops is a not-for-profit organization that gives a weekend backpack full of child-friendly food to at-risk children throughout Southern Illinois.
The award honors volunteers who have made a difference in the state and highlights the importance of volunteering and community service.
Awards were presented to people in five service regions in three categories. The five service regions are Northeast, Northwest, East Central, West Central and Southern Illinois. The three categories are youth ages 18 and under, adults ages 19-54 and senior ages 55 and older.
The award is also given to one Senior Corps, AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve member in each region.
The Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards focus on five areas: Economic Opportunity, Education, Environmental Conservation, Disaster Preparedness/Response, Health and Veterans’ Affairs.
