Ribbon cutting Sept. 4 for new AMVETS Center | Community Spirit
MARION, IL (KFVS) - The Marion VA Medical Center and the Illinois AMVETS Service Foundation has announced the grand opening of the new AMVETS Center on the Marion VAMC Campus.
Funded by a $3.9 million donation from Illinois AMVETS, the new center features over 16-thousand square feet of space dedicated to serving Veterans and their healthcare needs.
"The Illinois AMVETS are incredibly proud to have the Illinois AMVETS Veterans Center open. We truly believe that this facility and the services offered to our nation's heroes will help our Veterans returning home," said Illinois AMVETS Service Foundation Commander Paul Kerby.
VA Medical Center Interim Director Frank Kehus said he feels this center is just another example of how the VA works with community organizations in order to put the needs of Veterans first.
"The mission of the Marion VAMC is to take care of Veterans, and provide high tech healthcare services as conveniently as possible," he said. "It is an honor to work with generous organizations such as AMVETS in order to guild the facilities which allow us to meet our patients' medical needs, and achieve our goal of being the healthcare provider of choice for Veterans."
Services located in the building include Behavioral Medicine, Prosthetics, Physical Therapy, and an AMVETS Service Officer. Marion VAMC Prosthetic Service Chief Janet Taylor said her team is excited about the move and the collaborative opportunities it presents.
"We will be working with a well-trained core staff which also includes Veterans and Combat Veterans. It is exciting to think what all of us working together can do to improve and help sustain the quality of life for our Veterans, their families, and significant others."
But according to Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service Chief Dr. Paul Guidos, it goes even beyond collaborative opportunities.
"This new (AMVETS) facility allows us to provide state of the art rehab, and develop new programs such as Aquatics and Cardiac Rehab to ensure that all Veterans needs are met, and that this is accomplished at the absolute highest level of services available," he said.
The Marion VA Medical Center System provides healthcare services to over 42,000 Veterans living in Southern Illinois, Northwestern Kentucky, and Western Indiana. The system includes a full service Medical Center in Marion, Illinois; a Health Care Center in Evansville, Indiana, and 10 Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Hanson, Mayfield, Owensboro, and Paducah, Kentucky; Vincennes, Indiana; and Effingham, Mount Vernon, Harrisburg, and Carbondale, Illinois.
The Illinois AMVETS Veterans Center, located on the Marion VAMC main Campus, will be fully operational and seeing patients at the end of September. A ribbon Cutting ceremony is planned at the center on September 4 at 1 p.m.
