Miners pitcher sold to N.Y. Yankees

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The Southern Illinois Miners announced the contract of their right-handed pitcher Cory Cowsert has been sold to the New York Yankees.

Cowsert is expected to report to the Yankees Gulf Coast League affiliate on Thursday, June 16.

He leads the Miners with 19 strikeouts in 15 and a third innings this season. In 2010, he led the Frontier League with 13.5 strikeouts per nine innings. Cowsert is 3-0 with a 0.55 ERA and two saves in 11 relief appearances.

"I was really in shock," said Cowsert. "Words can't describe it. It's one of those things you want your whole life. Getting the opportunity, it's just phenomenal. Words just can't explain it."

Cowsert is the 17th Miner to sign with a Major League organization since the team began five years ago. The 23-year-old signed with the Miners last August straight out of Central Methodist University.

Fighting mosquitos begins in your backyard

Spring rains have brought mosquito breeding to many southern Illinois backyards, and with it the risk of West Nile Virus, according to the University of Illinois Extension.

"The first step to fighting mosquitos begins in your backyard," according to Rhonda Feree, University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator.

West Nile Virus is most frequently transmitted through the house mosquito, according the extension. They state the insect can only fly about 1 and one-half miles, and the mosquito usually breeds and lives in  backyards.

Mosquito eggs and larvae must have water to live. Water sources have to be removed as soon as possible from residential yards and communities, according to the extension.
