SIH cancer center project receives state approval

CARTERVILLE, IL (KFVS)- Southern Illinois Healthcare announced Tuesday they received unanimous approval from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board in Chicago to build the region's first freestanding cancer center.

The approval came on the heels of regional support for the 42,000 square foot facility to be located on Route 13 in Carterville on 15 acres of wooded property just west of John A. Logan College.

"We are excited to move forward. From the beginning, this project has received substantial community support by way of the many letters sent to the Review Board on our behalf and fundraising support through our SIH Hope is Home campaign. We look forward to building the region's first comprehensive, state-of-the-art cancer center," said SIH President and CEO Rex Budde.

The new center will bring all of SIH's cancer care services under one roof.

Marion City Council does not adopt conceal carry regulation

MARION, IL (KFVS)- While lawmakers in Springfield continue to wrestle back and forth over a new Conceal Carry Law in Illinois, one Southern Illinois town decided to get ahead of the issue.

City leaders in Marion decided that they would adopt their own Conceal Carry measure for their employees.

Part of the proposal would regulate what size knife an employee could carry on the job.

Another  clause in the proposal would prohibit employees from carrying a weapon on city property while representing the city, or on the job.

"What the mayor wanted was to let people know regular rank and file employees do not carry a weapon at work while they're on city property, other then law enforcement," said Jane Kidwell Human Resources Director City of Marion.

After much discussion back and forth among the city council members. And a review of what is currently in place in the city's employee handbook regulating weapons.
