Ameren Illinois warns of possible fraud calls

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Ameren Illinois issued a warning Thursday of con artists trying to defraud customers and may be trying to steal identities by demanding payment by phone.

Ameren says the targets appear to be small businesses and residential customers.

“Ameren Illinois representatives never come to your business or home and demand payments or threaten to disconnect service unless they receive a payment," said Stan Ogden, vice president of Customer Service and Public Relations. "Our field representatives do not accept payments for service.

Youth softball clinic

Youth softball clinic

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The National Pro Fastpitch players will host a youth softball clinic on Friday, July 8.

The clinic is in addition to the games and banquet that day. It will be from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Tickets for the clinic are $50 per person and registration starts at 8:30 a.m. at Rent One Park.

New acting Transportation Secretary announced

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Governor Pat Quinn announced she has named Ann L. Schneider as acting Transportation Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Schneider currently serves as the agency's Chief of Operations. Her appointment follows the retirement of Gary Hannig, who served since 2009 and oversaw the busiest construction season in state history.

"As we head into this busy construction season," said Governor Quinn, "the department of Transportation needs an energetic and capable leader, and Ann L. Schneider has shown herself time and again to be just that. Gary Hannig's experience and deep knowledge of state government proved invaluable to my administration. Our state is a better place thanks to his leadership."

As Acting Secretary, Schneider will oversee more than $2.5 billion in capital projects.

She has served as IDOT's Chief of Operations since 2010.

Shrine Club Poker Run event

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The Williamson County Shrine Club will have a Poker Run on Sunday, July 10.

The event will be at the Williamson County Shrine Club located at three miles north of Marion, Ill. on Route 37.

It costs $10 each per run and that includes dinner. Prizes will be given for best hand, worst hand, etc.

A schedule of events includes:

  • 10 a.m. - Sign in
  • 11 a.m. - 1st out
  • 12 p.m. - Last out
  • 4:30 p.m. - Last in

Proceeds from the Poker Run will benefit the Williamson County Shrine Club and its charities.

New legislation allows those with disabilities to wear bracelet that contacts 911

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) Governor Pat Quinn announced Wednesday she signed a legislation to improve the security of Illinois residents with different disabilities using a remotely-activated bracelet.

The bracelet will contact emergency services during a missing persons incident.

“We need to make sure that our most vulnerable citizens can get help when they most need it,” said Governor Quinn. “This measure will greatly help caregivers and emergency personnel respond to someone who needs assistance and return them safely.”

Under the current law, it is a Class A misdemeanor to install or connect an automatic alarm, alarm altering device or mechanical dialer that contacts 911. House Bill 1610 is an exemption for bracelets that can be remotely activated to alert emergency response personnel of a person in need.

The bracelets are activated under the new law are activated upon alert from a missing person's registered caregiver.

Weekly summer stroll in Marion

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The weekly summer stroll, bike or walk in the historic Tower Square will be Wednesday, July 6 at 6 p.m.

Participants will meet at the Marion Square to start the one mile event.

The weekly exercise will continue every week through August 1 ending in a 5K stroll on Saturday, August 13.

No registration or sign-up is required for the stroll. Refreshments will be provided.

Miners schedule over holiday weekend

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The Southern Illinois MIners will host games all weekend along with fireworks.

A game schedule for Saturday, July 2 through Monday, July 4 includes:

  • Saturday - Miners play the Windy City Thunderbolts for a three game series starting at 7:05 a.m. also Showcase Saturday
  • Sunday - Miners play the Windy City T-Bolts at 7:05 a.m.
  • Monday - Finale of the fifth homestand of the season against the Windy City T-Bolts also Winning Monday
