Two Marion men face charges in connection with incident of gunplay

MARION, IL (KFVS) - According to the Saline County State’s Attorney, two Marion men face several charges in connection with an incident of gun play in Carrier Mills on August 3.

Roy Antonio Johnson, 24, of 1003 Sherman Drive, Apartment B in Marion, Ill. is charged with home invasion, armed robbery, two counts of aggravated kidnapping and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

Andrew Derrell Johnson, 25, of 912 East Boston Road, Apartment C in Marion, Ill. faces similar charges.

Police say the men entered the 405 East Washington Street home of Vearn Guyton, Jr. and hit Cortez Ellis in the head with a gun in the course of the altercation.

I-57 crash claims the life of Missouri woman

A crash on interstate 57 in Williamson County claims the life of a Branson, Missouri woman Saturday evening.

It happened around 7:40 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-57 at milepost 54.

Illinois State Police say 29-year-old Tesse Carman of Forsyth, Missouri tried to make a U-turn in the median and pulled out into the southbound lanes in front of another vehicle driven by 18-year-old Lucien Charland of Engleside, Illinois.

Carman received only minor injuries when Charland's vehicle hit the car.

A passenger in the Carman car, 23-year-old April Czekala of Branson was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt and was killed in the collision.

The passenger in the Charland vehicle, 71-year-old Lucien Charland, sustained major injuries and was taken to a St. Louis hospital.

Carman was cited for disobeying a traffic control device.

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The Marion Police Department has released a crime report on Friday.

The report from police features:

  • Goodwill Store has reported a retail theft under $300 on August 11
  • Thefts from motor vehicles have been reported in the 800 block of N Market Street and the Illinois Star Mall parking lot on August 11
  • Midwest Cash has reported Criminal Damage to Property in an apparent burglary attempt on August 10.

Southern Ill. recieves $17.7 million in disaster assistance

MARION, IL (KFVS) - Southern Illinois has been awarded over $17 million for disaster assistance due to spring flooding and storm damage.

August 8 marked the final day for individuals to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and to return disaster loan applications to the U.S.

Junior champions crowned at the Ill. State Fair

ILLINOIS (KFVS) - The Illinois State Fair crowns the First Grand Champions in the Junior Livestock Show.

The new champions include:

  • 1st place - James Banas, 13, of the Saratoga 4-H Club won with his Cornish Cross Trio
  • 2nd place - Sam Shafer, 19, of the Jolly Workers 4-H Club won with his White Pekin Ducks
  • Grand Champion - Kenzie Schlipf, 13, of the Dunlap Dynamite 4-H Club won with her New Zealand Rabbit Meat Pen
  • Reserve Grand Champion - Mallory Munster, 18, of the LeRoy 4-H

The Illinois State Fair will be Friday, August 12 through Sunday, August 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

A schedule of events will include:

  • Friday, August 12 - County Fair and Horse Racing Day. More than 70 county fair queens and 105 fairs and expositions from across the state are represented at the fair.

Durbin speaks to business leaders about the economy

Senator Dick Durbin made a stop in Southern Illinois Thursday morning to talk about his perspective on what's happening in Washington.

Durbin had a lot to say about the nation's situation in dealing with the economy. He spoke to business and community leaders Thursday morning at John A. Logan College.

The senator says in order to get the nation back on sound financial footing, everything must be on the table for discussion. Durbin says tax hikes, entitlement reform, and spending cuts must all be considered.

The senator said a lot will depend on how Congress reacts in the coming weeks and months in the wake of the US credit rating downgrade.

ISP trooper on patrol accused of running over pedestrian

Illinois State Police are investigating one of their own after a man was run over while crossing a street in Marion late Tuesday night.

The state police say the trooper was on routine patrol shortly before 10 p.m. when he struck a man who was crossing Illinois Route 13 at the Russell Street intersection.

Police say the trooper was not in pursuit and his emergency lights were not on at the time of the crash.

The officer was on patrol traveling westbound on Route 13 when the officer saw a pedestrian in the middle of the road. The officer tried to avoid hitting the pedestrian, but was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian.

The officer immediately responded by notifying emergency personnel and rendering first aid, according to ISP.
