Local blood drives, American Red Cross offers online rewards program

(KFVS) - This fall the American Red Cross will be offering the Red Cross Racing, an online rewards program for blood donors in the Missouri-Illinois region.

The Red Cross says after their donation, donors can go to RedCrossRacing.com and report their donation. Members will be awarded Donor Rewards points for each donation, which will be exchanged for exclusive racing merchandise such as: die-cast cars, t-shirts and golf bags. Donors can also convert these points into Best Buy Reward Zone points, up to 800 Reward Zone points for each donation.

Upcoming Southern Missouri blood drives include:

  • Sept. 12 - American Legion Hall, North High Street, Jackson, MO, 1:30 PM to 6:30 PM
  • Sept. 12 - Oran High School, 310 Church Street, Oran, MO, 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM
  • Sept. 13 - Richland High School, 24456 State Hwy 114, Essex, MO, 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM

Jury finds man guilty of Williamson Co. murder

A Williamson County jury found a 21-year-old man guilty of first-degree murder Monday.

Travius Tucker was found guilty of first-degree murder.

He was charged in connection to the shooting death of Jamel Davis.

Investigators say Davis was shot and killed in an apartment on Ninth Street in Herrin in November 2010.   

Also charged in the case are 22-year-old Tommy Hampton of Carbondale, 21-year-old Demetrius Moore of East St. Louis and 22-year-old Torvelle Stanley of Cahokia.

Cash Dash event to be held in Marion

Cash Dash event to be held in Marion

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois State Treasurer will hold Cash Dash events in Southern Illinois.

At the event, State Treasurer Dan Rutherford will help residents determine if the state is holding any money or unclaimed property that belongs to them.

On Tuesday, September 13, a Cash Dash event will be held at 20's Hideout at 2602 Wanda Road in Marion. Representatives will be on hand from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Elder said these are Ringneck Doves and one is of an unusual color. He said the pair feed in his yard every day.

Students will try to break world record

Students will try to break world record

MARION, IL (KFVS) - Students from Extreme Kids in Marion, Illinois will try and break a world record this weekend.

The students will try to break the worlds record for the most people to do a handstand at one time.

It's all part of National Gymnastics Day. Students in gyms around the country will simultaneously perform a handstand at noon central standard time.

Saturday will also be customer appreciation day at Extreme Kids. Students and their family will get free hot dogs and drinks.

Extreme Kids offers gymnastics, cheerleading, dance, karate, and youth fitness classes.

"Ducks on the Mississippi River" race scheduled

"Ducks on the Mississippi River" race scheduled

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - If you head out to the Misssippi River in Cape Girardeau this Sunday, you'll probably see a lot of ducks on the water!

The Esprit Optimist's will host their annual "ducks on the Mississippi River" race.

Registration for the event begins at 10:00 a.m. The race starts at 1:00 p.m. at the Broadway River Gate.

1,000 small rubber ducks will be put on the water to race down to the river to the bridge. The first 3 ducks to make it to the bridge will win a prize.

Proceeds from the event will go to Children's Cancer Research and other projects for kids.
