State shuts down pools for non-compliance

More than a dozen swimming pools in southern Illinois have been closed by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

According to the department, the pools have not complied with state regulations that require all pools and spas to be retrofitted with special grates that prevent swimmers from being trapped by the suction of the filtration intake systems. There are about 500 municipal, park district, school, and hotel pools that are not in compliance.

It's part of a federal law passed in 2007. The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa safety act mandates the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to enforce mandatory suction entrapment regulations for all pools and spas.

Here's the list of pools in the heartland that are not in compliance:

Ameren linemen wear pink

The next time you see an Ameren lineman in southern Illinois, check out what they're wearing.

This month Ameren Illinois employees are wearing pink hard hats to raise awareness about Breast Cancer. One division manager says more than 50 percent of his employees took part and raised about $2,500 for the Susan G Komen Foundation.

"Once you start getting involved with it, then you find out even in my division, that either have somebody in their family or somebody they know and it really does touch a lot of people," John Barnud, Ameren Illinois Division Manager said.

Ameren Illinois Real Utility Men and Women Wear Pink got inspiration from the wife of a lineman, a Breast Cancer survivor.

Ill. ranked 32nd for drivers most likely to hit a deer

(KFVS) - According to claims data from State Farm, Illinois is ranked 32nd in the list of states where a driver is most likely to hit a deer.

While Illinois is ranked 32nd, West Virginia tops the list for the fifth year in a row. Iowa is second, followed by South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Montana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and Wyoming. According to State Farm, the state least likely to have deer-car collisions is Hawaii.

According to the data collected by the insurance company, the number of deer-car collisions in the U.S. has dropped. Using claims data, they estimate 1.09 million collisions between deer and car occurred in the U.S. between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. State Farm says this is 9 percent less than three years ago and 7 percent less than one year ago.

The data shows that a deer-car collision is most likely to happen in November, the heart of deer migration and mating season.

Fallen Vietnam veteran honored in afternoon ceremony

Many came out on Saturday to honor a Vietnam veteran killed while riding his motorcycle on route 127 September 23rd.

Friends, family, and fellow soldiers honored the life of 75-year-old Jerald Zallen of Herrin.

Zallen served in the US Army's Cavalry during the Vietnam War and survived the "Valley of the Death."

Later on in his life Zallen wrote a book about the battle featuring the members of the unit he served with in the army.

We're told Zallen loved to ride his motorcycle and visit with his neighbors.

"When he first moved into the neighborhood he was quiet," said Debbie Johnson a friend of Zallen.  "He actually came to our door and asked us if we could all come over and meet him."

Johnson recalls that visit saying, "He sat us down with cake and tea and told us about the book We Are Soldiers."

Free health screenings for women

Free health screenings for women

(KFVS) - In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Sam's Club announced they will be offering free women's health screenings.

On Saturday, Oct. 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., every Sam's Club Pharmacy will be offering all women, members and non-members, free and simple tests that check thyroid health.

“The estimated number of people with undiagnosed thyroid disease may be 10 percent. For women, the risk is even higher. A woman faces as high as a one in five chance of developing thyroid problems during her lifetime, and that risk increases with age and for those with a family history of thyroid problems,” said Jill Turner-Mitchael, senior vice president, Sam’s Club Health and Wellness. “Our free thyroid screenings are a quick and easy way for women to make sure their bodies are functioning and will continue to function in a healthy way.”

The free screenings will include a TSH test, blood pressure and BMI tests.
