Photo contest deadline

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The deadline for the Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge photo contest is Saturday, October 1st.

The annual contest is sponsored by the Friends of Crab Orchard. There are 4 categories: wildlife, plants & fungus, scenic, and youth. The photos have to be taken on Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge.

You may enter up to 5 photos per person. It costs $5 per photo for adults. Kids may submit 5 photos for $5.

They should be no smaller than 5x7 and no larger than 8x10. The photos need to be matted with mat board with a finished size of no larger than 11x16. Those who enter photos are asked not to put the photos in glass, frames, or with hangers.

The photos need to be turned in at the Refuge visitor center on Route 148 in Marion by 4:30 p.m.

IDPH: Wednesday is World Rabies Day

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Health says Wednesday, September 28 is World Rabies Day, a global campaign to spread the word about rabies prevention.

The theme this year is "Working Together to Make Rabies History." It was founded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Alliance for Rabies Control to bring people from around the world together.

“Rabies can be prevented through increased awareness and education about the disease, as well as pet vaccinations,” said Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Damon T. Arnold. “Preventing and controlling rabies starts at the community level.  World Rabies Day is an excellent time to talk with a veterinarian about pet vaccinations and learn what animals typically transmit rabies and how to avoid them.”

Rabies is a virus that affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals.

10th anniversary of the Pink Bagel

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Pink Ribbon Bagels celebrate 10 years of fighting breast cancer.

In October, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Panera sells the Pink Ribbon Bagel with a portion of the proceeds from each bagel going to a variety of breast cancer causes throughout the country.

Panera says donations from the sale of the bagel have now raised more than $1 million for breast cancer charities. They say they hope to make 2011 the largest year for donations ever.

The concept began in 2001 when Sue Stees, co-owner of 18 Panera Bread franchises and a breast cancer survivor began searching for ways to help other women fighting the same disease. She developed the Pink Ribbon Bagel and sold 27,000 of them in the first year.

Williamson County woman charged with arson after police pursuit

A Williamson County woman was put behind bars late Saturday afternoon following a 2-county police pursuit.

According to the Williamson County Sheriff's Office, Linda C. Ambrose of Dr. Springs Road was arrested and held without bond on felony traffic charges. Sheriff Bennie Vick says Ambrose is also charged with residential arson, and other charges will be forthcoming on Monday.

Her husband Richard Ambrose says it all began after the two had an argument over some family problems.

"She misconstrued it and she lost control," said Ambrose.

"She thought I was asking her for a divorce and all this. And all I was telling her was let's just split apart for a little bit. And that's when she decided, I guess she wanted to kill me."

Car seat safety check points set up across Illinois

When it comes to keeping kids safe in their car seats sometimes all it takes is a little instruction and guidance.

That's exactly what law enforcement, health care agencies and the Illinois Department of Transportation offered Saturday.

The program called "Don't Leap Too Soon" set up car seat safety check points in more than 80 locations in the state.

"The reason it's so important is because 80-percent of the car seats that come through our checks are incorrectly installed," said ISP Trooper David Sneed. "So when you look at the big picture that's a lot of kids running around the nation not secured properly in their car seat."

Illinois wasn't the only place in the nation taking part in the "Don't Leap Too Soon" program. Car seat safety check points were set up all across the Heartland Saturday, and around the nation.

St. Joseph Church open house

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The St. Joseph Church in Marion will host an open house to show the public their newly renovated church.

The open house will be Sunday, September 25 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The public is invited to come and tour the newly renovated church for free. St. Joseph Church is located at 600 North Russell.

Herrin library adds eBooks for eReader

HERRIN, IL (KFVS) - The Herrin City Library announced its eBook collection is now compatible with the Amazon Kindle.

Patrons can download eBooks from the library using the free Kindle app. To get started, just follow this website.

The library also offers eBooks and audiobooks for use on PC or Mac computers. They're also available for other mobile devices like smart phones and the Barnes & Noble Nook.

A spokesperson for the library said they will continue to add books to the collection as the program grows.
