Olympic torch ignites the start of this year's Special Olympics

MARION, IL (KFVS)- Local law enforcement officers took to the streets of southern Illinois to raise funds for the athletes of Special Olympics Illinois, in the 2013 Law enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

"It's that smile on their face, and that they are all so happy to see us is just really, really rewarding," says Shelby Counts.

She along with 24 other Criminal Justice Students took part in the run, despite the heat, to kick off the games.

"To be able to give back financially and personally our time and of just completing something like this," says Sarah Stevenson.

Their efforts raised more than $2,000 this year.

Last year, the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run raised almost $3 million dollars statewide, making it the second highest grossing event in the world.

Health Department reminds residents to prepare for mosquito season

Health Department reminds residents to prepare for mosquito season

(KFVS) - With a wet spring and ever changing temperatures, Franklin-Williamson Bi-County Health Department urges residents to play it safe when they are outdoors.

Mosquitoes often carry diseases, such as West Nile virus. Local health departments all across Illinois work closely with the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Illinois EPA to educate the public on the prevention of West Nile virus, including the elimination of mosquito breeding sites.

Any location with water that becomes stagnant is a potential breeding site for mosquitoes. One of the most problematic of these sites is the accumulation of used tires. The design of tires makes them an ideal breeding site for several species of mosquitoes, some of which are important carriers of West Nile virus. Because they are easily filled by rain and collect leaf litter, they provide as an "incubator" for mosquito larvae.

Search of WWI soldier's grave reveals 130 missing gravestones

An author and two professors who have done extensive research on the Herrin cemetery Potter's Field believe there are more than 130 missing graves in section 15 of the cemetery.

HERRIN, IL (KFVS)- The search for a WWI soldier at the Herrin cemetery has actually turned up a lot more than what the people involved could have ever expected.

The Herrin cemetery was originally laid out on a 25 acre piece of ground.

Part of it was set aside as a Potter's Field for the poor, unknown or unclaimed bodies that have died in Herrin since 1905.

The story gets interesting with WWI soldier Antonio Molkovich's grave.

He was one of the 16 miners who were killed in the Herrin massacre and buried in 1922 in the Herrin city cemetery Potter's Field.

But in June 2009 when Scott Doody tried to find the soldier's grave in the cemetery to photograph it, it was no where to be found.
